The American Civil War (1861-1865), has many Legends, Myths (and more than it’s fair share of Ghost Stories), as We have seen. But one facet of mythology (based in some fact), is the untold Millions of Dollars in unrecovered Gold, once held by the former Southern Confederate States of America. While The Confederacy did print paper currency, this never quite was standardized within that Country. Gold was the standard for monetary wealth. It is out of this fact, that many years of ‘’hidden’’ Gold stories have come forth. From sunken ships trying to move untold wealth from a dying Government to ‘’other Countries’’ – having sunk under mysterious circumstances, to massive piles of Gold simply ‘’buried in the ground’’, have caused ‘’treasure seekers’’ for over a Century to dig and hope to find it – with most ending up empty handed, or dead (through misadventure).
In many instances of Lost Gold, even Curses are attached. Buried by former Confederates who hoped to revitalize The ‘’Lost Cause’’ or establish another Confederacy elsewhere, tales of extremely bad luck and death are attached to these ‘’warning Tales’’. And while some Confederate Gold has been discovered, some ‘’Motherlodes’’ have yet to be. The most popular Tale is that involving Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Escaping Richmond, Virgina when it was captured by Federal Forces in 1865, He and His entourage apparently moved perhaps a Billion Dollars in Gold bars. Fearing capture (which they were), it was buried in the outskirts of Richmond. No one has ever found it or has a clue to it’s whereabouts. This ‘’cache’’ has become a sort of ‘’Lost Dutchman Mine’’ Quest for treasure hunters since 1865.
