Formally thought to be a legendary creature, The Coelacanth has been proven to actually exist. Although not seen with great regularity, this species of Armored Fish was thought o be extinct by about 400 Million years. The first known Coelacanth was brought up from the depths off the coast of Madagascar Island (Africa), in 1932. It reportedly lived 15-minutes before it died (pressure adjustment). The Coelacanth species (via it's fossils) were a form of proto-fish that would evolve into Lungfish and other Tetrapods. They lived in the Cretaceous Period. Just how the species managed to survive is a matter of discussion. Living many miles deep in The Atlantic and Indian Oceans, they were the top of their ecological food pyramid . With no predatory species to attack them, this particular line never went extinct. Coelacanth's appear to grow to 6.5 feet long and can weigh around 200 pounds. Their flesh is not suited to human consumption. The last live capture of a Coelacanth was in 1990.
