Maize or Corn was an important staple in the diet of The Aztec Peoples of Mesoamerica. So important in fact, that a Class of Gods were tasked with it’s protection (from fire, flood etc.) These Deities were known as Cinteteo. Of the (4), these were Yayauhca, Cozauhca, Tlalauhca and Iztac. They protected Black, Yellow, Red and White Corn. Priests and whole months of worship and ritual were assigned to Their Patronage.
