A highly controversial Ritual and accompanying Device, A ‘’Cilice’’ (which falls into the classification of ‘’Self-Mortification’’) is a type of form fitting metal chain band, fastened to the thigh of a Religious (Ordained or Secular). The Chain Band has small semi-sharpened ridges or studs applied. When a Person, walks or thru purpose, clinches His or Her leg muscles, the studs ‘’dig into the flesh’’ (causing discomfort and pain). It is thru this ‘’Act’’, that a ‘’serious’’ Religious can ‘’experience’’ Christ’s ‘’suffering’’ during His ‘’Passion’’ (Execution). Although widely decried by the current Catholic Church, some Religious Orders may still use The Cilice. An example would the ultra-fanatical ‘’Opus Dei’’ Order.
