From Ancient Greece (and possibly older), come The Centaurs. These mythical creatures come in both male and female species. The upper portion of their body is that of a human (with head, torso and arms). The lower portion is that of a horse. Centaurs are considered benevolent in that they are often seen as teachers of human children. Said to be the offspring's of Nephele and Ixion (Gods), male Centaurs do have a militaristic nature at times. Their human component is generally no stronger than a mortal man, however. They were involved in mythical war against Lapids (mythical Herculean peoples). They though the Centaurs to be deformed by nature and needed to be killed. The myth of The Centaur was used heavily in early Middle Ages art and illumination of manuscripts. Pictographs depicting them have been found in Pictish Scotland.
