The process of Castration is thousands of years old. Used originally as a form of Religious procedure for Ancient Priests and Holy Men, Castration was seen as the "ultimate" form of purging oneself of all "carnal" needs and desires. Additionally Men were specially selected in The Middle East, for the "honor" of guarding a Sultanates Wives. Known as Eunuchs, they were liberated of their genitals in some cases to ensure complete fidelity. Some Ancient Cultures saw not only the removal of the Testes, but the Penis as well as true Castration. Naturally, a skilled Practice was needed for this. Even so, death from blood loss, shock and infection were common. Later, it was determined that only the removal of the Testes, was required to remove the normal hormonal secretions.
As time passed, Castration entered into the "catalogue" of Torture. In theory, by Castration of a future Ruler, his Heir could not be born. This removed this equation from potential Pretenders to a Throne. The process was also seen as an early form of punishment for "sex crimes". The process in practice involved stopping the flow of blood to the organ by rope tourniquet. An incision was then made in the Scrotum, from which the Testes would be cut away from it's bodily attachments. Naturally, no anesthesia was given, and the victim was very much awake and aware of the procedure. The Inquisition used Castration briefly in the 16th Century as a way to illicit information. The practice was also popular in England and Germany as well. The Act us still used today, both surgically (by knife) and chemically.
