The device known as The Canque– was of Portuguese invention, and later adopted by many other Nations as a means of Public Humiliation and as an Execution device. Meaning ''To Yoke'', The Canque was in essence a portable Pillory. Normally made of heavy wood, the frame was fitted onto the neck and rested on the shoulders. Weight cound range from 15 to an amazing 35-lbs. The Canque was secured via chain to either the waist of even ankles of the Victim. The size of the frame was designed to no allow the Victim to be able to bring His or Her hands to their face or mouth. In this means, The Canque was used as an execution device, with the goal of starving a person to death (normally in plain public view). In terms of Public Humiliation, normally the crime or infraction the person did (or did not) – was written on the facing boards of The Canque. The Victim could not feed or give themselves drink, and this was done only once a day – to enhance the torment. The Canque was also a very popular method used by The Imperial Japanese Army when they occupied China in the 1930s.
