Used for Light in The Middle Ages by all, The Candle had other significant uses in many 13th Century Countries. “Evil Spirits” (who reside in the dark) – cannot stand light. By maintaining a lone (burning Candle), it was thought to serve as a “magnet” of sorts. IF a Candle “flickered” (consistently), it meant a Spirit was near (and mesmerized by the dancing light). In trace, the Spirit would be trapped and vanish at Dawn (never returning). Other Countries (as in Germany), stated during the same Period, that any type of “Bluish Flame” was a “sign” that a Ghost was near. The Old Saxon (England) tradition of “Lating Night” was held on All Hallows Eve, when all in a Village “lit” their candles to trap and force all wandering Spirits away (at least for the year!)
