A ''popular'' 13th Century device, The Burning Wheel was made of iron. Mounted on a rotating hand-cranked bar (suitably raised 2 to 3 feet off the ground). The victim would be tied "back first" to the outside face of The Wheel. Ones arms and hands were tied over the head. The legs and feet would be likewise secured at the other end (straightened out perpendicularly). A basket of burning coals or fire would be placed under The Wheel. The Administrator of the device would begin by simply turning the hand-crank (slowly). The Victim was exposed to the fire by increments. A Victim could even be left over the fire for a prolonged period if necessary. The goal of The Wheel was not to kill, but to extract information or a Confession.
