The veneration of Relics is NOT just a Christian belief. Many other Religions have similar Customs. In Sri Lanka, Buddhism is the dominate theology. It is based on the teachings of The Buddha who lived in the 5th Century BC. When He died in 543 BC, He was cremated (as was custom). But several physical remains miraculously survived the funeral pyre, and one of these was His front Canine Tooth. Seen as a ‘’sign’’ from the now ‘’Spiritual Buddha’’, The Tooth was retrieved. Placed in a reliquary – it as been venerated ever since. Although not ‘’worshiped’’, The Tooth is ‘’meditated upon’’ – as a means of working towards achieving ‘’perfection of Spirit’’. In Kandy, Sri Lanka – The Tooth is present in it’s current Home, known as ‘’The Temple of The Tooth’’.
