Perhaps one of Bengali Mythos most ''frightening'' Demons, The Betaal are said to be Spirits that otherwise have no form of their own. They like to inhabit Cemetery's and ''take over'' bodies. Normally, The Betaal does not find decomposition ''revolting'', but do prefer ''fresh dead''. They cause the body to move around as it did in life, but it is said that The Betaal does not ''eat or drink''. The corpse will also not rot until The Betaal decide to abandon it for another. Some Bengali believe that one should cremate their deceased as a means of denying The Betaal. Should One ''see'' a long dead Ancestor, it is prudent to trap them and burn their body – of which The Betaal will immediately leave.
