The Practice of ''Bastinardo'' goes back well beyond The Middle Ages (and seen in many Countries). The theory was to restrain a Victim's feet (either tied, raise or otherwise contained). The next step was to whip or beat the soft soles of the accused. Leather whips, metal barbed wires, sticks, etc – would be used. The pain (due to the sensitivity of the appendage) – was extreme. Often, beaten until the upper layer of skin was completely gone, often the Victim would never walk again. Used as a “non-lethal” form of punishment, forms of Bastinado are still practiced in some Countries.
