A combination of The Barrel and the Pillory System of Punishments, The Barrel Pillory was another Germanic (and later French), Punishment methods of the 16th Century. In many cases, The Victim often died of starvation or blunt force trauma. Seen used for cases of repeated theft or of bearing false statements, The often 200-pound solid wooden Barrel was made specifically smaller and shorter than it’s intended Victim. This was so that when placed inside (restrained by rope or chain) – they were made to be even more so uncomfortable. Passerby’s were encouraged to hurl insults or even strike the head of The Victim (who was duly refused any medical treatment). Normally, only a thimble of water was provided. Duration of “stay” went from 3-days to  several weeks.
