Baloma

In The Tribal Culture of The Trobriand Islands (a portion of Papua New Guinea) – Islanders believe in a concept of Ancestral reincarnation known as ‘’Baloma’’. It is believed that a suitable female relative of a deceased Family Member can be reborn ‘’inside’’ the selected woman. The Candidate, after a lengthy ceremony and pre-ritualistic purging, strips naked and sits in The Ocean (to the waist). The Spirit ‘’seed’’ of the Ancestor will then arrive with the tide and so impregnate the female. Thousands of generations old, it was not until the early 20th Century that Western Culture was made aware of Baloma.
