The use of a Knife in Magic for Spell Casting goers back uncounted Centuries. The first mention of such by a proper name The Athame, goes back to the 12th Century. Such Blades were used in preparation of certain herbs and plants used in Spells. They were part of Elemental Magic and often used in ceremonials associated with Earth, Fire, Water and Wind . The Athame was seen as the Controller of all such Elements. Used to reckon directions in a Ceremony of The 4 Directions , The Athame pointed the way one needed to direct his Prayers or Spells . Traditionally a White Magic component, The Athame was seen as a Black Magic device in the 15th Century. It was mentioned in the infamous Key of Solomon and other Grimories.

In Black Magic, The Athame was used in Ritual Sacrifice or Blood Offerings . These blades were often Black handled and suitably Cursed for use. Often a proven Murder weapons was sought as a Athame Knife. In other Earth Magic , The Athame was seen as being constructed from the purest of Metals such as Silver. They were single edged and sharpened. Human Blood (spilt), often caused The Athame to be destroyed with a new one being created. Each Coven needed to manufacture their own Athame (as they could not be purchased). Once created, The Athame was often infused by a Guardian Spirit . This was a practice seen among Wiccans and the Ancient Druids.
