A competitor of Britain’s Hammer Film Studios – Amicus Films was a worthy producer of mostly Anthology Horror Films. At times, ‘’Hit and Miss’’, perhaps one of Their best was 1972s ‘’Asylum’’. The Film, which was an adaptation of Horror Writer Robert Block, had (4) ‘’stories’’ linked inside the Film. Although the (then) Special Effects are (at times) laughable, the overall Film was well received and developed a large Following in later years. With a few well known British Horror Stars, The Plot deals with a young Psychiatrist interviewing for a Residency Position at an out of the way, County Asylum. Meeting the Chief Doctor of The Facility (wheelchair bound), We learn that One of the four ‘’criminally insane’’ Patients was responsible for His injury. The ‘’test’’ for our young Doc? Interview each and determine which one ‘’did it’’. The Position will then be His. Each Patient, tells His or Her own ‘’tale’’ – which are the (4) provided in Thye Film. From a botched Voodoo Curse, to the infusion of One’s Soul into a mechanical Doll, and of course ‘’Killer’’ Mannequins – the best by far is the Tale of a Tailor whose mysterious Patron wishes Him to make a very ‘’special’’ suit of clothes (only to be sewed at night, between the hours of 12am and 3am). The end of ‘’Asylum’’ is completely twisted when We find out who the Patient was that crippled The Head of The Asylum. For a dated Horror Film, ‘’asylum’’ is nonetheless well worth checking out!
