Roger Scabcoat, Philip Greytail and Rupert Silverback are the three unlawful sons of the original Rat, the Duke de Puce, referred to as the rats or sometimes as vermin. The boys grew up with their father and upon his death at the Boy’s hands inherited his lands and titles. Besides his titles, the boys also inherited much of their father’s personality, being cruel, greedy, craven and mostly just as inept. At some point prior to his demise, the duke shared his dislike of the Boy with his sons. Ten years later, the rats were quick to join the Wolf’s cause. Their new master tasked them with subjugating the free lords of the north: Thomas Blackstaff of the Marshlands, the Sultan and the Iron Duke. The rats proved very capable in this endeavor. Silverback drove Blackstaff back to his castle, Greytail conquered the Sultan’s city, and Scabcoat was en route to deal with the duke. Their fortunes took a turn for the worse when the Boy arrived. One after the other, the brothers were defeated. Finally, the boy assaulted their homeland and took their castles. The sons of de Puce, though, managed to slip away.
The rats are the main opponents for five missions of the military campaign. Throughout these engagements their armies consist of armed peasants, men-at-arm, archers, pikemen and catapults.
The rats make a return as the prime antagonists of the Blackstaff Campaign. Thomas Blackstaff is tasked with hunting down the fleeing brothers after their defeat. The rats flee across the sea to an island under the control of an ally of theirs, the Brotherhood. The rats and the Brotherhood attempt to destroy Blackstaff but are eventually defeated and imprisoned.
Throughout this campaign their forces are augmented by large numbers of swordsmen and macemen as well as some crossbowmen.
