Man at arms are one of the first melee troops you have access to and are relatively cheap to produce. Men at arms have a throwing spear which reappears, and a short sword for close combat. Despite having no armour, these units are rather slow and extremely vulnerable to ranged attacks. As such, they're best used either defensively or supported by armed peasants or mantlets. Their low cost and the quick rate at which spears are produced makes them an excellent unit to field in large numbers. They also work well in combination with archers atop walls or towers, raining down spears on enemy units coming in range.
