The name “”Witch Tower” may be a later 16th and17th Century term applied to these types of defensive structures. Prior to those Eras, these structures were normally double defensive towers built into a City wall system or Gateway. They were often used as prisons or holding areas for persons accused of heresy, treason or suspected witchcraft. Their defensive measures were simply to keep unauthorized persons out (and convicts in). Witch Towers were normally gabled structures (topped). These structures (often confused with Gatehouses and Towers), are seen mostly in Germanic Countries.
