Designed for use by US Cavalry and Mounted Infantry (Dragoons), The Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber was modeled after the British 1796 version. Single-edged (slightly curved blade), the saber was 36-inches long. Weighing around 5-pounds, it featured a plain “D” Hand Guard. The weapon was the workhorse of The American Army during The Mexican War of 1846-1848. It's replacement was due to the need for better hand protection in future models. The Model 1840 was eventually replaced by the 1860 Heavy Saber (but still saw action with Confederate Cavalry).
