Known as “The Wheel Hat” for is semblance to a wheel, it was the standard issue for all US Army Units (Infantry, Cavalry and Artillery). Also called “The Ploughman's Cap”, is was the first Official Hat created and issued by The Army. Comfortable in Winter (Wool), but horrible in Summer – it had a short front leather Visor. A Chin Strap was also used. The Wheel Hat was an iconic feature of The American-Mexican War of 1846-48. It was replaced in the 1850s by The Hardee Hat.
