Built as a supplement weapon to the Model 1911 Automatic, Smith & Wesson's revolver was made in the .38 Caliber variety. Chambering 6 shot, (using an innovative “half-moon” contact clip- for rapid reload). The weapon featured a fixed front sight on either a 4 or 6 inch barrel (with the 6-inch being the most popular among US Army Officers). First produced in 1917, the weapons saw moderate use on the battlefields of World War I (and were popular for a time with Pilots). The weapon served well into the 1980s in The US Army weapons inventory.
