A popular, yet unofficial US Flag, The 34-Star “Great Flower” received it's name from the arranging of the “now” 34 State Stars into a pattern similar to a large flower (at the start of The American Civil War). The design was quite popular with many Northern Units. The “Great Flower” was used from 1861 until 1863, when the Canton design went back to a horizontal pattern.
