In The American Civil War, attempts were made to properly identify Union (Northern) Field Hospitals. This was made so that enemy gunners would not fire upon the sick, injured and dying. In The North, a Bright Yellow Flag was designed, with a simple (and large) – Green “H” was centered (representing the word “HOSPITAL”). It was flown in plain view (normally in the center of a Field Hospital grounds. In The Confederacy (The South), similar attempts were made. The use of a White Flag with a Red Cross was attempted – but it did not take hold. In The Northern Cause, Yellow and Dark Green are considered the official “colors” of Army Medicine (and still are).
