The first unofficial flag of the newly established Confederate Government (1861), the flag was a blue field, set with a large white 5 pointed star. The use of a ''Lone Star Flag'' was a common design used prior to The Civil War (as far back as the 1820s). First raised in South Carolina by shore artillery batteries that fired upon the Federal controlled Fort Sumter, The Bonnie Blue Flag was carried briefly in battle by several Southern Militias (in lieu of a National Standard). It was replaced by the official National Flag known as The Stars and Bars.
