Sailing Master (Position)

On a Pirate Ship, The Sailing Master was responsible for the navigation of the ship. This position was mostly an “indentured” occupation. Often when a ship took captives, they were subject to the Pirate Code of “Distribution of Justice”. Simply put, it was “join or die”. Skilled positions such as Sailing Master had NO choice but to join. They realized that the better they performed, the greater there chance was at staying alive. They were therefore fed well, given extra and well treated (for the most part). Normally an average Sailing Master had 5 to 8 years experience with Navigation and Cartography. He had to report to The Captain daily. Most Crewmen disliked The Sailing Master (due to his fringe benefits).
