Ramparts were designed to provide a length of structure or wall as part of a Castle or Fortifications defense perimeter wall or line. Broad enough in width to allow troop and equipment movement, Ramparts were important part of defensive wall systems. They allowed observation and fire direction – as well as another platform for fire defense. Made of earth (antiquity) or stone and masonry, Ramparts are some of the oldest forms of military fortification building – going back centuries. They could be used in conjunction with many other building designs to bolster defense and protection of a fortification. Ramparts as part of military engineering continued well into the 19th Century.
