Establish in 1318 by ex-Templar Knights, The Order was founded under Portuguese Authority. Still considered a “Military Order”, the Knights briefly participated in the latter part of The Reconquest. Secularized in 1789, The Order is still identified by the Ranks of Grand Master, Knights Commander, Knight and Officer. Women (Dames), are not allowed. The insignia of The Order is a Red Latin Cross, with a smaller version superimposed in the center of the first. An 8-pointed Star (Gold), in surmounted. The entirety of the insignia is fixed to a plain Red Ribbon.
