Originating in the 19th Century, The Pipe Banner is a form of Unit identification Flag used by Scottish Bagpiping Regiments. They are normally only flown during important Functions. These are very intricate and embellished Banners that are attached to the “Drone” (or Top Pipe) of the musical instrument. The Pipe Banner can be made of cloth or silk, and are often made in a Tartan Plaid pattern in a color to reflect the particular Unit. While Pipe Banners indicative of Scottish Military Bagpipe Units, some Civilian Band Units also use Pipe Banners.
