One of the oldest forms of defensive structures in warfare, Outposts were either small or large permanent or temporary structures, built to garrison a small detachment of soldiers. Built of stone or wood, an Outpost provided some measure of protection for troops tasked with observation of enemy movements or providing harassing fire to an advancing same. Often cleverly designed to blend into it's surroundings – Outposts could be simple or quite elaborate “mini Forts”. These structures were usually not reinforced to withstand heavy bombardment or attack.
