These Roman Warships served chiefly as Transport Ships (around 12-13 B.C.). Made of wood and roughly 70 feet long, Navis Lusoria ships featured a single Main Mast and Oars (for propulsion). Similar to the much later Carvel-Class, Gunwales were erected for the shields of soldiers to be placed outwards (sea side). This provided some level of protection. Consisting of 2 Decks, they could carry 30 to 50 soldiers. The Navis Lusoria was seen in use primarily in Germanica. Most of their vessels abandoned after the loss of Germanica – the local inhabitants saw no use for them. Hundreds simply rotted away.
