Murder Hole

Initially a drop hole or opening, normally built into a gatehouse or passageway in a castle. It's primary aim was to allow fire, oil or related caustic substances to be poured onto an attacking enemy. Other items used were rocks, arrows, hot sand, quicklime and tar (for a few other examples!). These holes could be fashioned in walls (but were more effective at entrances).
