Mauls (and yes the phrase "to maul one up" comes from this), was basically a sledge hammer! Similar in design to today's construction tool, the Maul had a heavy flattened hammer-like front with a blunted rear semi-spike. This weapon could inflict maximum damage to an enemy. Seen in use during the 14th Century, Mauls made an appearance at The Battle of Agincourt (1415). Documents tell of English Archers, not only using Mauls to build fortifications, but using them as hand weapons. Hardy Lads, those Archers!
