From Norman times, The Steward was a Household Servant who was tasked with food preservation and service. These were Senior Staff within a Noble Household (and had great power). In 12th Century England, it became the fashion to appoint the highest member of the Household Staff to this position (often a Lesser Noble). As time progressed, these people were tasked with preparing and organizing Tournaments, Banquets and Feasts. The position was by then re-titled as Lord High Steward. It is still an existing position. In certain ceremonies he is the 3rd to follow The Sovereign into a room.
