Considered a “Great Sword”, The Zambato was comparable to the the European Double-Handed Great Sword. Developed in the 14th Century, this Katana-type blade took many months of “metal folding” to achieve the necessary strength typical of the Japanese blades. The blades were somewhat more slender in construction to a traditional Katana (roughly 2.5 inches in width). The blades however, average around 5 to 6 feet in length! The handles were designed for two-handed use (and added an extra 8 to 10-inches in length). This was a single-edged weapon. Seldom carried in a scabbard (for obvious reasons), The Zambato was seen as a Samurai “Infantry” weapon. It allowed the User maximum distance with regards to engaging both Cavalry or Pole Armed enemy soldiers.
