Development of The Nagamaki Sword can be traced back to the 8th Century (reaching it's maximum development in the late 12th Century). An unusual blade, it featured an overlong handle – almost 20-inches in length. The actual blade itself measured 24 inches. Carried in a scabbard, the handle featured a “hilt wrap”, which improved grip on the weapon. Considered a two-handed weapon, it's “kata” technique required overhead, downward thrusts and slicing movements. The Nagamaki Sword was documented as being effective against Cavalry.
