Seen in 13th Century France, The Groat was used in France, Italy and Germany. It was pure Silver in composition and weighted between 2 and 4 grams. Their “value” was based on how the Region of usage debased it's “Penny”. They were often well engraved. England instituted a Groat around 1351 (weighing 4.67 grams). It was “worth” “4 Pennies Sterling”.
