This Medieval System was where a Sovereign would bestow (or grant) to a favored “Henchman” (or trusted Associate) – one or more Royal Manor Houses for use in perpetuity. This favor required the person to perform a specific task for The King or Queen (and as such is granted a home to live in). The practice pre-dates The Norman Conquest (and was in wide use when a King or Queen granted “special gifts” that were not Titles). Grand Serjeantry was ONLY bestowed at formal Coronation Ceremonies.
