The Gorget was a steel collar, worn separately or with protective head gear - designed to protect the neck and portion of the upper chest of it's wearer. They were a component piece to accompany a Breastplate (or related armor). Developed in the 13th/14th Century, they were known to be elaborately decorated. In additional to combat, Gorgets were used by ceremonial and Guard units. As time and development progressed, Gorgets became much smaller. In the 17th Century, Gorgets were made of hard stiff leather (designed by this time to protect the neck against sword or dagger cuts/strikes).
