A Gonfalon was a specially designed Flag, upon which was placed one's Coat of Arms. The Gonfalon was seen as a way for Noble Knights and Royalty to “announce” their presence on a battlefield or while traveling (when the display of one's Coat of Arms was considered impractical). Triangular shaped, The Gonfalon was somewhat similar to The Feudal Japanese Sashimoto Flags. They were longer and were hung on an inverted “L”-shaped Pole. This allowed for the Gonfalon to be properly displayed and seen. They could NOT be used in Ceremonial Procession.
