These were segmented pieces of metal designed to protect the hands and wrist of the wearer. In broader terms, Gauntlets could be of made of heavy leather, chain mail or even flexible fabrics. Some more intricate versions had fully articulated metal finger attachments as well. Gauntlets are much older than The Middle Ages, going back well into Antiquity.
