These were padded defensive jackets worn separately or with various other armor components. The idea of Quilting was born from this innovation. Normally, the Gambeson were joined pockets filled with wool or linen. They provided a minimum of protection. Some more field experienced fighters started to put wood or small scraps of iron inside the pockets for more protection. They were worn by Archers and Spearmen. Gambeson apparel were popular staring in the late 11th to 14th Centuries.
