An improvised Trench Warfare weapon, The French Nail were converted long bayonets or twisted iron poles – sharpened into stabbing and thrusting weapons. Often, “Handles” were nothing more than the continuing “wrapping” of the iron into shape. Often great time and style went into the designing of a French Nail. This was born of many hours of boredom spent in the Trenches of World War I between offenses. Lengths were also varied , but they ranged from 2.5 to 3 feet in length. Not only The French, but Germans made Trench Nails for hand to hand fighting.
