Seen in use in England from 1653 to 1659, The Protectorate Flag is sometimes called The Cromwell Flag. Designed by Cromwell to represent The Commonwealth of England, It featured a different “former” Kingdom Flag (representing the different regions of England prior to The Civil War), in all four Canton quadrants. These were St. George, St. Andrews, and The Irish Lyre (Ireland). The center of the flag featured a white lion in a black shield. Still used after Cromwell's death (by his Son, Richard) – it would be replaced by The Restoration of The Monarchy.
