This term encompassed the main defensive enclosure of a castle or fortification. If in terms of a castle, this would mean then defensive line of curtain walls and towers. If in terms of a fortification or city, it would incorporate not only the defensive walls around the entirety of the city, but the associated Gatehouses and Towers.
