Developed in Italy, a simple piece of furniture was seen as an important way to keep alive!. In Medieval Italy (as in most areas of Europe), the preferred method of assassination was poison. Great care needed to be taken with who prepared your food and more important who brought it (served it). Many Nobles had vast enemies (with deep pockets), who could bride a Cook or Server. Enter The Credenza. From the Italian for “Confidence”, a Server would bring food to be “checked”, if it passed – it was placed on the side table known as a Credenza (meaning all food on this table is tested and safe to eat).
