Designed and used briefly in 1861, this Flag was used to identify Alabama's claim to succession from The United States (and their wish to join The Southern Confederacy). Flown over the State Capitol (briefly), it was not known to have been carried into battle. The Flag had a Blue Field, with a Red clad “Liberty” placed (sword unsheathed). She raises a “smaller” Alabama “flag” above her. A surmounted phrase “INDEPENDENT NOW AND FOREVER” was placed above all imagery (in Gold).
