One of the most important positions on a ship, The Carpenter was responsible for the repair and replacement of any and all wooden components of a ship. They were normally skilled craftsmen with many years experience with ship repair and wood working. Often a Pirate ship could NOT make Port with any regularity, so an experienced Carpenter was a highly prized commodity. Normally given Apprentices to assist him, they would often teach other crewmen the basics of repair (to increase performance and speed repairs). Carpenters also assisted in operating the “Pumps” or Bellows of a ship (should they take on water). Carpenters were often well payed with a higher rate of profits.
