These were small balconies with openings in the floor, from which Archers or other missile men could shoot downward onto an approaching enemy without coming into direct fire. Often built over a Gatehouse or onto the corner of defensive Towers and wall connections. Some designs had small roofs attached. These were innovative designs that did not become popular (due to the construction and cost). The Breteche was also a target for siege equipment (especially with the advent of cannon).
