Books were a common feature in Heraldic symbols. Devised in the 14th Century, there were two different "presentations". The first was an "Open Book". This imparted "Manifestation" (with regards to wisdom). The second type was a "Closed Book". This imparted "Counsel". Both versions had connotations of "Knowledge". Coloring was varied and often were not regulated as with other symbols.
